Because one is perhaps newly out as transmasculine, they will think that being straight is a must.

This is where conditional attraction comes back.
#AM I GAY IF I LIKE TRANS GUYS SKIN#
It is simply a misunderstanding of what it means to be trans, though it can get under one’s skin quickly.

This is sometimes an expectation when it comes to coming out as trans, heterosexuality is sometimes assumed. There is a large amount of transphobia that is hurled towards gay trans people, saying that we are “straight but with extra steps” or that it “would have been easier to just stay your gender and be straight”. This was something that I talked about in my original article, but I want to bring it back up again. Identifying as a man and wanting to be “masculine” It goes from “I know I must be queer” to “I am a woman” to “I am a woman attracted to women, because I know I am queer.”īut, what if you know you are transmasculine? That brings us to our next point.Ģ. But this - in the young transmasc’s head - makes sense. Being in denial about one’s trans identity can very quickly lead to confusion. Sometimes, being trans feels so unbelievable, that a gay transmasc would be convinced he is a cis lesbian (it happened to me!) This is the first form of conditional attraction. Often (not always) queer kids know we are some form of LGBTQ for most of our life, but it takes a long time to figure out what our identity is. Which would mean attraction to women, as a woman. However, if a trans realization is out of the question, then often one would be sure that they are queer. The transmasc would of course feel “different” or “othered” as someone who is realizing their identity might be one that can get them shunned.

Trans men will often think we are queer women (in my case, a lesbian) because if we have confusing feelings about men, we must not be attracted to them. Transmasc comphet is a form of compulsory heterosexuality that affects gay trans men / transmascs by combining internalized transphobia, homophobia, and misogyny. If you haven’t read Transmasc Compet, here is a brief summary. However, sometimes I read back the article and cringe, for I’ve learned a lot more since I wrote it, and have a lot more to say. To be able to write something that resonates with people like me. What I usually come across, is tweets among tweets from people saying that an article I wrote, and term I coined, has helped them. Every few weeks I search the term “transmasc comphet” on twitter.
